Important notes about DOCM, DOTX, DOTM, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX, XLTM, PPTM, POTX, POTM, PPSX, PPSM files recovery!
DOCX, DOCM, DOTX, DOTM are always saved as DOCX. See Table...
XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, XLTX, XLTM are always saved as XLSX. See Table...
PPTX, PPTM, POTX, POTM, PPSX, PPSM are always saved as PPTX. See Table...
Microsoft Office 2007 and later requires correct format of a document to be opened, otherwise you will see error messages, as shown below. In order to open recovered documents in a format, other than DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, please manually rename the documents to the correct file format (DOCM, DOTX, DOTM for Word 2007; XLSM, XLSB, XLTX, XLTM for Excel 2007; PPTM, POTX, POTM, PPSX, PPSM for PowerPoint 2007). What to do, if you see the error message like below?
1. Error message, when trying to open recovered Microsoft Word document:
Solution:
Make sure, you can see file extensions in Windows Explorer. More Info.
Change file extension from DOCX to DOTX. Try to open it again. If you see the same error message again, go to the next step.
Change file extension to DOCM. Try to open it again. If you see the same error message again, go to the next step.
Change file extension to DOTM. Try to open it again.
2. Error message, when trying to open recovered Microsoft Excel workbook:
Solution:
Make sure, you can see file extensions in Windows Explorer. More Info.
Change file extension from XLSX to XLTX. Try to open it again. If you see the same error message again, go to the next step.
Change file extension to XLSB. Try to open it again. If you see the same error message again, go to the next step.
Change file extension to XLTM. Try to open it again.
3. Error message, when trying to open recovered Microsoft PowerPoint presentation:

Make sure, you can see file extensions in Windows Explorer. More Info.
Change file extension from PPTX to POTX. Try to open it again. If you see the same error message again, go to the next step.
Change file extension to PPTM. Try to open it again. If you see the same error message again, go to the next step.
Change file extension to PPSM. Try to open it again.
Renaming File Format using Windows Explorer
In order to change format of a file using Windows Explorer, you should rename the file. Make sure you can see file extensions in Windows Explorer. For this purpose, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in the "View" tab of the Folder Options dialog box. For more information, please refer to Microsoft Windows documentation.
